Making a clay bowl

This beginner class will give an overview of basic clay techniques of hand building, slab, coil and pinch pot. 


General Information
  • For youth ages 8 - 13.
  • Students will learn to use tools for hand building spring molds, rollers, texture tools, and how to create slip.
  • The class will learn about the process of creating in clay from wet clay, leather hard, bone dry green ware, bisque fired, and finally glaze fired.
  • In this class children will build a coil bowl.
  • Children will learn to roll even thickness of coils.  
  • Coils will be layered one on top of another inside a paper bowl.
  • The layers will be scored and slipped together and the inside of the bowl will be smoothed. 
  • The 2nd class will be spent glazing your bowl after being bisque fired.
  • Using 3-7 colors of glaze and applying two coats of glaze over each color with a final coat of clear glaze, they will complete their project.
  • Students will be able to pick up their finished project from the town hall the following week after their classes are over. 
  • Note: students should bring a smock or wear old clothes for class.
  • Instructor: Deb Martin, Deb received her BS degree in elementary education K-9 with a minor in Art and her MS degree in outdoor teacher education.  She taught art education for most of her career. Her greatest love of art has been found in the area of ceramics.
